Renewing UNIFIL and introducing EU Military into Lebanon?

The UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon expanded pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in January 2006 was to assist the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to disarm Hezbollah and to restore Lebanese authority between the Israel-Lebanon border and the Litani River in Southern Lebanon. Twenty years later, in August 2025, under UNSC Resolution 2790, the UNSC decided to retire UNIFIL at the end of 2026, due to its manifest failure.

Last week, on 8 October 2026, the EU Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU supports an extension of UNIFIL. This proposal is a new item for the UNSC to consider in 2026. Alternatively, a Franco-Italian initiative proposes an international coalition to replace UNIFIL. Additionally, Kallas announced a new EU military support mission (EUSM Lebanon) to assist the LAF.
